The Mustang – an American symbol of freedom and independent spirit. These mustangs should be protected as diligently as we Americans work hard to protect our own freedoms. They are a living monument to Americas western history.
This is the purpose and the mission statement of the De Beque Wild Horse Council, a 401(c)3 non-profit organization. We, as a council, are committed to expanding public knowledge of the wild horses who live in the Little Bookcliffs Wilderness Area.
This area offers sanctuary to many herds of wild horses and is one of only three protected sanctuaries for wild horses in the United States.
We work directly with the Friends of the Mustangs and the BLM who monitor the herds and maintain the trails and public accesses. The De Beque Wild Horse Council hosts an annual event, the De Beque Wild Horse Days, in De Beque, CO, to raise public awareness about the Little Bookcliff Mustangs and the lands they call home. During this event the Friends of the Mustangs bring their adopted mustangs for the public to witness these beautiful animals in action. People can talk with F.O.M. members as well as representatives from BLM, ask questions and even put their name in for a free drawing to adopt a mustang of their own.
De Beque Wild Horse Days grows every year and this year is our 11th Anniversary. This year it will be a two day event with many events, activities and games for all ages. See our Activities Tab for more information on what will be offered this year. There is always Free Admission to watch the main events – which makes it affordable and fun! But don’t come to just watch – join in the fun and participate in the many activities organized for the whole family to enjoy! Some activities/events have entry fees, but those fees are awarded back out as prize monies.
Come and see us the weekend of August 14th & 15th, 2010. We would love to see you there and to share with you our love of the mustangs who live just outside our back door!
